Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
